1995: The Start in Lago Agrio with Tilapia Farming

Agroindustrias González was founded in 1995 in Lago Agrio, when the young engineer from Zamora, Jorge González, decided to develop his farm and industrialise its products, starting with tilapia farming. Three decades later, in Lago Agrio the group produces tilapia, paiche and fattening pigs, while pig breeding is concentrated at the Borja nucleus farm, in Napo province. The company presents that fish farming as a historical alternative to aggressive practices such as fishing with barbasco or dynamite.

2000: Imported Genetics and Over 2,000 People Trained

In 2000, the company imported high genetic quality tilapia from the United States and promoted its farming in eastern Ecuador. In partnership with the Nueva Loja prefecture, it trained more than 2,000 people in tilapia handling and production, five years before Agroindustrias González was officially founded as a company and began pig farming and processing.

2005: The Company Is Officially Founded and Topigs Norsvin Arrives

Agroindustrias González was officially founded in 2005, with the aim of organising and strengthening the family’s agro-industrial and commercial production. That same year it began pig farming and processing, with the first cured meats factory in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and the company became the exclusive representative of Topigs Norsvin in Ecuador, a global pig genetics brand that the company itself presents as a pioneer of the sector in the country.

2007 and 2010: Topswine and the Country’s First Great-Grandparent Pig Nucleus

Topswine was born in 2007 as the company’s branch dedicated to breeding and marketing pig genetics across the country. In 2010, Agroindustrias González expanded its genetics unit in Borja, Quijos canton, taking advantage of the area’s sanitary conditions and isolation: this is where Ecuador’s first great-grandparent pig nucleus was established, the unit the company specialises in pig reproduction.

2015: European-Standard Infrastructure and Tilapia Super Males

In 2015, the company rebuilt and expanded the pig infrastructure on its farms, incorporating animal welfare under European standards. In fish farming, it developed genetic technology in tilapia super males in parallel, to optimise production.

2020: Market d’Lago Directly Connects Producers and Consumers

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Agroindustrias González created Market d’Lago in 2020 to connect producers and consumers directly. The brand now has three shops in Quito and one in Lago Agrio, where a team of trained advisors helps customers choose each cut. Its products carry traceability declared from the origin, including the feed and the rearing conditions of the animals.

The Borja Farm, Latin America’s First Welfair Certification

The Borja pig farm, in Napo province, was the first in Latin America and in Ecuador to obtain the Welfair animal welfare certification, a standard that audits 4 principles and 12 criteria covering the animals’ feeding, housing, health and behaviour. The first certification process took place on 5 May 2023, the certification was renewed on 1 August 2025, and the farm’s cuts are the ones Market d’Lago sells under declared traceability.

2025: Alliance with Exafan as the Company Marks 30 Years

In 2025, Agroindustrias González celebrates 30 years with new projects: the start-up of a new meat processing plant and the alliance with Exafan, a Spanish company with more than three decades of experience and an international benchmark in equipment for animal production. Agroindustrias González now represents Exafan in Ecuador, bringing technology and innovation for the farming sector to the country.

Who Leads Agroindustrias González Today?

Jorge González, founder and general manager of Agroindustrias González, remains at the head of the company he created in 1995, guiding its growth and its shift towards ever more innovative and responsible food production.

Mirza González leads Topigs Norsvin Ecuador, where she drives genetic development and innovation for pig production. In 2026 she also took over the presidency of the Ecuadorian Association of Pig Farmers for the 2026 to 2028 term.

Jorge Andrés González, manager of Market d’Lago, leads the direct connection between production and the consumer, bringing products of known and traceable origin to homes, restaurants and hotels.

Together they represent a company that looks to the future with the mission of feeding families through human, animal and environmental wellbeing, and with the vision of establishing itself as a benchmark in food production with innovation, sustainability and responsibility.

People, Land and Production

Agroindustrias González has a team of more than 60 staff, 60% of them women. Its operations run across Lago Agrio, Borja and Quito.

In Lago Agrio, the group has 110 hectares, of which 15 are given over to producing pigs, fish, sugar cane and pasture. In Borja, there are 172 hectares, with 40 given over to production. In total, both properties add up to 282 hectares, of which 55 are in production and 227 are kept outside the productive areas.

Both properties are also part of a natural setting of great biodiversity. In the woodland areas kept under conservation, species such as spectacled bears, tapirs, capybaras, pacas and various species of monkey can be found. Taken together, more than 76% of the surface of both properties is kept as private reserves.

Our Commitment to the Amazon

Our commitment to the Amazon shows in the way we produce and manage our resources. Since our beginnings in Lago Agrio, we have developed practices that seek to use resources responsibly and to reduce the impact of our activities.

One example is our multi-stage anaerobic biodigester, which turns pig slurry into biogas, used to heat the farrowing rooms and the piglets, and into biol, a liquid fertiliser that we pass on to farmers in the area for their own use.

We also keep large areas of woodland outside the productive zones, helping to conserve the natural setting and its biodiversity.

Producing in the Amazon means taking on a responsibility towards the territory. That is why we want every decision and every process to reflect a responsible way of doing things.
